Sweetened only with dates and maple, these beans are syrupy, smoky, and thick, the kind of dish that makes cold nights feel warmer when piled high on crusty bread.

Searing the Beef

Substitutions: Omit bacon or sausage for a vegetarian version, or use smoked tofu cubes instead.
Serving: Perfect with cornbread, roasted vegetables, or spooned onto baked potatoes.
Make-ahead: Flavors deepen after a day—ideal for preparing ahead.
Wine pairing: A malbec or smoky syrah pairs well with the richness.
Leftovers: Store in the fridge for up to 4 days, or freeze in portions for future meals.

In our house, baked beans mean comfort, the kind of slow simmer that fills the kitchen with warmth on cold evenings. This version keeps the sweetness natural, relying on dates and maple for depth, balanced by molasses, smoke, and vinegar. Navy beans soak up the syrupy sauce, turning tender and rich, ready to spoon onto bread or serve beside something crisp and green.

I’ll preface this by saying I’m not a chef — just someone who loves to cook and needed a place to gather and share the recipes that have shaped my kitchen.

From the classics that are always on rotation to the discoveries I’ve stumbled upon along the way, you’ll find them here. Each recipe is shared in its original form, with Anthology’s Notes added at the end to reflect the tweaks and touches that suit our table.

Over the years I’ve tried to make many recipes my own, so you’ll also see those variations woven in.

Basically: cook, taste, adjust, and repeat.
